KOLKATA, 1 AUG.: The state environment minister, Dr Sudarshan Ghosh Dastidar, flagged off a mobile campaign van from Paribesh Bhavan in Salt Lake today to spread awareness against the use of plastic carry bas and thin plastic items.
The van would travel in seven different routes for eight hours everyday covering various parts of the city from today till 7 August. The van would exhibit banners and inform people of the exiting regulations against use of use of plastic carry bags of thickness below 40 microns and that fine has been imposed on its use in the city. It should be noted that the minister had earlier declared that fine to the tune of Rs 50 to Rs 500 would charged from people and shops using and stocking plastic carry bags.
Even though there are enough provisions for the ban of plastic, its use continues and it could be wiped out completely only by making people aware about of its ill effects, Dr Ghosh Dastidar said.
He said that on 9 August, a meeting would be conducted with chairmen of different municipalities and the urban development minister so that each civic body could frame ways to check use of plastic bags.
