For a drop

The city can never disappoint its people. For the deprived souls who spent the Pujas in the somber call centres Diwali came as a pleasant break. A few of them planned up a Diwali bash at a friend’s place after the day’s work. But to their dismay found all the liquor shops closed. There was an order to shut the shops at 4 p.m. another ‘fellow explorer’ informed and no amount of pulling the strings to get hold something that cheers and inebriates yielded results. A man at the pan shop who was listening to their conversation offered to help and took the “thirsty flock” through the dusty and desolate streets of Chandni Chowk. Following the man to the basement of a building, the call centre workers were surprised to find a crowd of students, servicemen, call center executives, labourers, businessmen, rickshaw pullers. Hurriedly pushing the “quarters” (wistfully remembering the p’s and q’s) into the pocket, paid the man who was busy counting the bottles in a wooden box covered with a sack. This is indeed a resourceful city.
