KOLKATA, 5 JUNE: The city dwellers now have a toll free number ~ 033-23359088 ~ through which they can lodge their complaint about environmental laws being violated, announced the state environment minister, Mr Sudarshan Ghosh Dastidar, at the celebration of World Environment Day organised by the West Bengal Pollution Control Board (WBPCB) at Nazrul Manch today.
The minister said that residents of any part of the state are welcome to inform the environment department officials about violation of laws and if they find any unit pollution the surrounding through the toll free number. They people are also welcome to give their suggestions on improving the environment to officials, he added.
Mr Dastidar also said that he would hold a national symposium on genetically modified (GM) rice very soon to inform people how to approach the issue and inform them about the pros and cons of GM crops.
The minister stressed on involving school students in spreading awareness about environment protection and said Environment Day celebrations would be made mandatory in schools.
