Tech trouble block greener way

KOLKATA, 14 DEC.: The state department of power is having a teething trouble in implementing newer technologies in the energy sector due to the lack of well-trained engineers, said Mr Malay De, chairman and managing director of West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited and principal secretary of state department of power & NES.
He was speaking at a function held at Vidyut Bhawan to commemorate Nation Energy Conservation Day.
He said that the standards of the state engineering institutes have fallen because of which it has become difficult to recruit engineers. “Energy efficiency is the need of the hour and it is important make sure that lesser percentage of energy is lost during transmission,” he added.
Prof Ajoy Roy, Vice-Chancellor of the Bengal Engineering and Science University, had earlier said during the programme that 27-30 per cent of energy is lost during transmission and distribution. Some private agencies claim the percentage could be as high as 65 per cent.
Mr De also said that ultra power grids is being which will not only reduce energy loss but also would be of great help for bulk transmission if nuclear power is used in the state in future. He said that with promotion of renewable energy, power theft and power loss should also be reduced, especially reduction of stand-by power consumption. He said that if energy efficiency is improved and power conservation is reduced, generation of 20-30 per cent energy wouldn’t be necessary.
He said that solar energy is expensive and if there is no state subsidy then the most efficient low cost alternative would have to be found out. “We need cheap solar energy. It shouldn’t matter whether it is from West Bengal or Rajasthan. The state has better potential for small hydro projects and it should be developed,” he added.
The cost of solar energy would come down in the span of 10 years while the cost of fossil fuels would increase because of non-availability, he added.
